Join Us for a Fun-Filled Summer on the Water... We Have a Camp For Everyone

Houston Yacht Club

Summer Camps 2020

Due to the increase of Covid precautions in Houston we have made some modifications to the July Sailing Schedule. Opti Session 3 and Laser Session 2 have been canceled and replaced with a small group practice schedule and private lessons.

We appreciate everyone being supportive and on board with these changes, as disappointing as not having camp is. Our goal is to be as flexible as possible to still get the sailors on the water! We have our full staff here and available for private lessons for the next three weeks, contact Laura or Connor to schedule a lesson.

Don’t forget to look at our Summer Camp FAQ Sheet under the “Helpful Links” Tab. If you have any further questions please contact Laura the Sailing Director

The two ago groups will be separate during chalk talks and on the water training.

Green fleet sailors are beginner racers. During this day camp we will focus on boat handling, racing skills and the rules of the road. Our entire group of sailors will work out together in the morning but then will be separated for chalk talks and on the water training.

RWB fleet sailors are intermediate and advanced opti sailors. We will focus on advanced boat handling as well as advanced race technique.

Dingy Fun Racing

This month and summer we want to provide as many opportunities as possible for everyone to get on the water.  Fun racing is a casual way for you and youth sailors to get out on the water and race or just enjoy the evening.

May Fun Racing:

This month Fun Races are on Fridays with first gun at 4pm.  The race course will be in Wussy Bay and the race committee boat will be Count Down.  The gates to the beach will be open and you are welcome to launch from the floating dock or beach. I am recommending beach launching when possible to keep socially distant. It is a very quick sail to the course from the beach and a quick escape in the event of a sudden storm.

Summer Fun Races

In June and July the fun races will be moved to Saturdays with a 4:30 first gun.

There will be two scored series:

-          Series one will be the following Dates

o    June 6th, 13th and the 27th.

Day Camp Safety Protocol

Check-in

·         In an effort to make sure we do not have crowds of campers and parents in the lobby at one time there will waiting points out side the lobby. Three families at one time come in the lobby to check in for camp, fill out necessary forms and ask any questions before moving on to the second assigned rally points.

Group Separation

·         As part of the check in process each camper will be given a color-coded bracelet to indicate where that camper's rally point will be around the club. This will reduce the number of campers in one area at a given time.

Lunch

·         Lunches will be available for purchase. Each lunch will be individually wrapped, and no self-serve buffets will be offered. All tables will have a limit of number of campers allowed to eat at and tables will be spread out.

Activity planning

·         Many of our normal summer camp games are too hands on. We are working to replace them with safe alternative games that are fun but limit camper to camper contact.

·         Pool time rough housing will be monitored to eliminate unnecessary contact.

General Sanitization

·         All hard surfaces, markers, eating areas and handles in our common areas will be sanitized every morning, afternoon and at the end of the day. We have a non-toxic, quick dry spray that has been approved by the CDC for use for Covid-19.

·         Pens, marks and other items that multiple people use will be sanitized after each person.

Most importantly if you or your camper is sick please do not come to camp. If you or your camper has been in contact with someone who has sick or diagnosed with Covid-19, please do not come to camp.

Please contact Laura with any concerns.
